Starvation Lake, Bryan Gruley, 2009

First Novel! I do love Aunt Agatha’s first in a series table. I’ve found more wonderful mysteries there over the years (along with a few real clunkers.)

This hockey lover’s book could have a subtitle: “Status Assignments are Impervious to Fact.” And if you don’t know anything about hockey and it’s place in UP life, you will have learned enough to watch a Red Wings game with some intelligence. There is a lot of hockey in this book.

I even find myself wondering if the towns are real, and wanting to know which ones they are based on so I can go visit.

The mystery is not easily guessed for most of the book. And  when it all comes together, it all makes sense, both real-world sense and emotional sense. The protagonist is a journalist who just has to know. And I believe that he does. I’m looking forward to the rest of the series.
